Lech Poznan have completed the signing of midfielder Gustav Berggren from New York Red Bulls on a permanent deal. The 28-year-old Swedish player has signed a contract that runs until the summer of 2029.

Berggren arrived in Poznan at the start of the week and successfully completed his medical examinations. The transfer was officially announced on Wednesday after the final formalities were concluded. The club's sporting director, Tomasz Rząsa, highlighted the value of the new acquisition. "He will bring us experience from playing in the Ekstraklasa and European cups. He has the predisposition to be one of the leaders." Rząsa said, quoted by SportoweFakty.

Why did Berggren return to Poland?

Gustav Berggren spent three seasons in Poland, playing for Rakow Czestochowa between 2022 and 2025. After his move to the United States, the opportunity to return to the PKO Ekstraklasa arose quickly. The player himself admitted that matches in Poznan were always special for him because of the atmosphere. He also spoke with his compatriots in the squad, Leo Bengtsson and Patrik Walemark, who encouraged him to make the move.

Berggren will wear the number 5 shirt for Lech. His debut in the new colours is possible at the earliest in the next round of European cup qualifiers, which Lech have already reached. He was not registered for the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League.

What role will he play in the squad list?

The arrival of the Swede is meant to increase competition in central midfield, where Lech Poznan already have several established players. Berggren is known for his good work off the ball and his ability to organise play. His experience from European cups, gained with Rakow, will be a major asset in the upcoming qualifiers.

The current Lech squad can be viewed on our squad page. The club currently occupies fourth place in the PKO Ekstraklasa table, as seen in the live standings. Berggren joins a team that drew 1-1 with Gornik Zabrze in their latest league match.

What are Lech's plans for the coming weeks?

The team's immediate goal is to fight for promotion in the UEFA Conference League. Lech Poznan will face Austrian club LASK Linz in the third qualifying round. The first leg will be played away on August 20, with the return leg scheduled a week later at the stadium on Bułgarska Street.

Before that clash, they have a league match against Piast Gliwice. The full schedule of fixtures is available in our fixtures calendar. The Berggren transfer was finalised just before the closing of the summer transfer window in Poland, which ends on September 2. The new midfielder could make his league debut in the match against Piast if manager John van den Brom deems him ready.

Gustav Berggren signed a contract with Lech Poznan that is valid for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029.
